Looking for Books Like Harry Potter? Read On!
We explored the world of fantasy fiction for young adults to adult readers. We were looking specifically for books with stories we think fans of books like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson will enjoy. Within this very popular style we found a new favorite series: “Jenny in a Bottle,” by S.T. Cogley.
Fantasy Fiction for All Ages Still Wildly Popular
Fantasy fiction is a style that has actually captured the creative imaginations of people of all ages, everywhere in the world. Unlike Sci-fi or Historical fiction for example, dream or fantasy fiction is recognizable by its enchanting realms, magical creatures, and epic journeys. It opens the door to a realm where the difficult ends up being possible. Specifically for young adult readers but appropriate for younger strong readers and even adults, the attraction of fantasy fiction depends on its capability to transport the visitor to captivating places. So yes, fantasy fiction is typically written for kids and young adults, but the genre has a lot to interest adult readers too.
In children’s literary works, there are lots of brand new fantasy fiction options with more series being published every year. As you read these stories, some may bring to mind familiar books like Harry Potter or the mythical realms located in the Percy Jackson books and the enchanting world of Narnia. Fantasy fiction books like these supply a gateway into worlds where anything is possible.
Of course, all these books are different with their own characters and stories. The common denominator is usually the magical world in which the story is set.
Fantasy books for adults contain complex worlds and explore detailed plots, ethical issues, and the human experience– same as those written for younger readers.
When the books are well written with compelling stories, they find audiences among many age groups. Just look at the collections from authors such as George R.R. Martin and Robert Jordan who have amassed a dedicated adult audience by adhering to the elements of fantasy that appeal to everyone.
Jenny in a Bottle Series, by S.T. Cogley
Which brings us to a wonderful, relatively new series called Jenny in a Bottle, by S.T. Cogley. This series starts with “Jenny in a Bottle: Rise of the Ghoul King”. The first book sets the plot for at least two sequels: “Jenny in Bottle: Sailor on the Eternal Sea” and a third book coming spring of 2024.
Although you don’t have to start with Rise of the Ghoul King, I always like to start a series at the beginning. According to the publisher, “Jenny in a Bottle” is an all-ages fantasy series filled with suspense, twists and turns, fantastic new worlds, friends and family problems, and some scary bits.”
The magic begins in a graveyard and continues with Jenny being chased across the Eternal Sea by the Ghoul King into and out of magical realms that co-exist with our Earth and time. The skillful use of cliffhangers keeps you eagerly awaiting the next entry when the story only gets better as Jenny and her brother desperately try to save their father, friend, and even the world.
This series is highly recommended for readers of all ages (the publisher says ages 10 to adult). It is not a difficult read but may be challenging to younger readers. The story is so compelling, it is unlikely that a reader will give up if the level seems a bit challenging, so if you want to challenge a younger reader, give these books a try!
